The story is out that there's a new conspiracy right here in our neighbourhood.
This is not just a theory. It's real, a big one, and it's ongoing while you read this.
So what's actually happening in that backyard ?
We'll know exactly within a few weeks.
Here's what I've been investigating so far.
This conspiracy is about electric rock music.
It's about some musicians who have been playing together for many years,
finally finding out what their mission is.
It's about them bringing something back to life again.
Something that seemed to be dead for three or four decades.
Maybe not really dead, rather sleeping, forgotten, out of sight or whatever.
Electric guitars screaming, roaring like a two stroke motorbike or even cutting through
like a circular saw. A growling and throbbing electric bass, the drums mostly butt-kicking and thundering, then again sometimes playful and gentle.
One keyboard reliably escorting the solo guitar, another just floating somewhere in space.
Powerful but yet natural voices, lyrics that do really say something, not just the usual
everyday yadda-yadda.
The long forgotten no-nonsense approach to the sound of instruments.
This means an Ibanez electric guitar that's not much younger than the man who's
playing it ( who is in his fifties by the way ). One Mesa Boogie tube amp, one additional
twin-twelve speaker cabinet with no digital toys in between to f**k up the signal.
A 1986's Trace Elliot bass amp as well as a late seventies' Pearl Thunderking MkII drumset.
A Roland keyboard producing genuine vintage organ and string sounds, occasionally
sounding like a real grand piano. Analogue mixing during the recording sessions accompanied by high end 16 channel digital
recording, finally mastered to 96 Khz 32 bit.
In my humble opinion this is the way it should be done. No messing around with the sounds,
keeping everything clear and natural. Just a little reverb, some compression sparingly used and carefully set. We once were used to have this kind of musical feeling, that was some fourty years ago
before all that plastic equipment came around along with boring auto-tuned uniformly sounding stuff, keeping annoying us since I don't know when.
We're not going to need Doc Brown's flux compensated time machine to get the real thing back.
Sure, a DeLorean would be nice.
But for now I'd suggest you just watch for your friendly neighbourhood BACKYARD CONSPIRACY.
This time they really did it. They really brought back what many of us had been missing
for such a long time.
It's here, right in the heart of Germany's capitol city, in good old ROCK CITY BERLIN !
As far as I am concerned, let me just say I'm really proud of being part of it.
IT'S NEW, IT'S GREAT, IT'S NOT LIKE RE-HEATED MICROWAVE STUFF, IT'S MORE LIKE
A BIG BARBECUE JUST GOTTEN HOT. DEBUT CD COMING SOON !
